When Mark Noble delivered his honest assessment of West Ham United’s hammering at Liverpool it raised more questions than answers.
West Ham had turned a corner under David Moyes and reached the 30 point mark with a 2-0 win over Watford two weeks ago.
But the heavy defeat at Anfield makes things hairy again for the Hammers in the increasingly congested Premier League dogfight.
The East Londoners are now just three points off the relegation zone and their goal difference – which could end up being crucial this season – took a hit too.
Fans are understandably unhappy with everything from the owners down to the team as the club continues to regress rather than progress since their much heralded move to the former Olympic Stadium.
David Sullivan, David Gold and Karren Brady were full of promises when they were keen to convince sceptical supporters to leave their beloved Boleyn Ground home of 112 years for the London Stadium.
Many fans reluctantly accepted the move based on promises over the stadium and transfer spending with the co-owners saying it could help the club compete for Champions League football.
But nearly two years on West Ham supporters are planning a protest march against the owners such is their anger about broken promises after some terrible recruitment and lack of spending since leaving Upton Park.
“If we’d got anything out of the game we’d have been buzzing,” Noble told whufc.com.
“Don’t forget they are competing for Champions League football.
“We gave it our best. I don’t think you can say the lads chucked it in, because they never did that, but at the end of the day they were too good. That’s why they pay so much money for their players.”
The move was meant to enable West Ham to do just that and splash out on top players.
And West Ham were meant to be aiming to compete for Champions League football by now, not worrying about staying in the division.
Whether Noble’s comments were a thinly veiled dig at the owners or not, it will leave even the most optimistic Hammer feeling disconsolate.
