Nabil Fekir was set to join Liverpool last summer for £53m – but the Premier League runners-up backed out of a deal.
Mark Lawrenson has encouraged Liverpool to renew their interest in Nabil Fekir after they narrowly missed out on the Premier League title, speaking to BBC Sport.
Liverpool finished the 2018/19 season with 97 points, a tally that would have been enough to lift the title in all but two of the previous 27 campaigns.
Unfortunately, however, Jurgen Klopp’s side came up against a brilliant Manchester City side, who lifted a second successive league title when they battered Brighton at The Amex on the final day of season.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool are willing to spend big this summer in order to go from nearly-men to trophy winners but, if they do, 1984 European Cup winner Lawrenson thinks Fekir should be at the top of their list.
“You might argue they don’t really need to desperately strengthen any one position, but I think it would be nice if they could get an attacking midfielder, of the sort they have not had since Philippe Coutinho left for Barcelona in January 2018,” he said.
“A criticism I heard a lot, particularly earlier in the season, was that with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain sidelined, all of Liverpool’s midfielders were too similar, and not adept at opening up defences.
“I am talking about someone with a bit more creativity, like Lyon’s Nabil Fekir, who they were going to buy last summer until the move fell through.”
According to The Mail, Fekir had all but completed a £53 million, £100,000-a-week move to Anfield in June, only for the deal to fall through after Liverpool discovered a potential problem during his medical.
The French World Cup winner has scored 12 goals and produced seven assists for Lyon in 2018/19, though he has often fallen short of his stellar best.
