Mark Lawrenson has told Stadium Astro that while Ryan Sessegnon is not the best defensively, he expects the Tottenham star to improve while Antonio Conte remains in charge – claiming the system is perfect for him.
Still only 21, Sessegnon has been in and out of the Spurs side since his £25million move from Fulham in the summer of 2019. So much so, he went on loan to Hoffenheim last term. But Conte has taken a liking to him.
Indeed, the England Under-21 star has now started Tottenham’s last three Premier League games and it was his assist that gave Spurs the lead on Saturday evening at Anfield. He squared it to Son-Heung min to score.
Luis Diaz equalised, after his shot deflected off the toe of Rodrigo Bentancur. Sessegnon was excellent for Spurs as he continues to be preferred to Sergio Reguilon – and Lawrenson gave his verdict on the lefty.
“The system they play absolutely suits him. He’s not the best defensively. He’ll get up and down all day. With Conte, whatever there is to get out of him, he will get out of him. He will only get better,” Lawrenson said.
Lawrenson on Sessegnon: System is ideal for Tottenham star
Indeed, Lawrenson is right in terms of Conte’s tactics suiting the ex-Fulham man. It is whether Sessegnon can earn the trust of Conte – and he is seemingly doing so given he has started the last three league games.
While he made a couple of errors against Liverpool, heading a ball across his own box being one, he was excellent in an attacking sense and worked hard to double up on Mo Salah with Ben Davies. He is improving.
