BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson says Tottenham should focus on the Premier League top four race.

Former Liverpool defender-turned-pundit Mark Lawrenson says that Tottenham’s title challenge is over.

The popular BBC pundit observes that this has been a strange season for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Spurs have been excellent in their Champions League campaign, but they have been inconsistent in the Premier League.

After making a strong start in the Premier League, Spurs seem to have lost their way, having won just once in their last five Premier League games.

They have dropped to sixth in the Premier League, and the gap between them and Manchester City have been extended to 18 points. Surely, it is impossible for them to close the gap now.

Lawrenson claims that their title challenge has gone now, and it might help to focus on the Champions League because they only need to finish fourth now.

He adds that it is well within their grasp if they start winning in the league again.

Of course, Spurs have a great chance of finishing within the top four and also go a long way in the Champions League, but it won’t be as simple as it sounds.

With City looking impregnable at the moment, the battle for the top four will be more intense than ever with the likes of Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal – all vying for that position, and most importantly, all these teams are playing well.

So, even if Spurs start to win, there is no guarantee that they will finish in top four, because they don’t have control over the performance of the other top four candidates.

“They are 16 points behind Manchester City now, so the title has gone,” wrote Lawrenson for the Mirror.

“But that might help them in terms of the Champions League, because they only need to finish fourth now, which is well within their grasp if they can start winning again in the league.

“It takes some getting used to, beating Real Madrid 3-1 and then having to play the likes of Bournemouth at the weekend. You can fall into that trap of thinking you can just turn up and win.”
