Mark Lawrenson states he will be ‘seriously worried’ for Everton if they get ‘run over’ by Newcastle United

Everton will take on Newcastle United in the Premier League at the weekend.

Mark Lawrenson has stated that he will be ‘seriously worried’ for Everton if they were to get ‘run over’ by Newcastle United when the two teams meet in the Premier League on Saturday.

Marco Silva’s side, who recorded a goalless draw against rivals and title chasers, Liverpool, last time out, will make the trip to St James’ Park hoping to increase their unbeaten run to three matches.

In recent months, the Toffees have suffered a number of bad results and performances in all competitions, including getting knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship side Millwall.

Nonetheless, BBC pundit Lawrenson backed the Merseyside club to pick up all three points against former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez.

“Everton got the draw they wanted against Liverpool last week, and I thought they did really well,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport. “They did not look much like scoring but they dealt with Jurgen Klopp’s side really well.

“After their display at Anfield in December, where they lost to a 96th-minute goal, it was probably their most committed performance of the season.

“I am not sure what the Magpies’ approach will be like this time but I think what happens in this game is far more significant for Everton manager Marco Silva.

“After all their hard work last week, and the way they raised their game, if the Toffees went to St James’ Park and got run over, then I would be seriously worried.”

Considering the size of the clubs, both Everton and Newcastle are definitely underachieving compared to where they currently stand in the Premier League rankings.

For the Toffees, who sit in the top 10, it’s about being patient and building a squad that can challenge for higher honours in the near future.

For the Magpies, it’s a simple case that over the years, their owner Mike Ashley simply hasn’t been ambitious enough which has reflected in their results and performances on the pitch.

Nonetheless, during the reverse fixture in December, Benitez’s side earned a point at Goodison Park, with Salomon Rondon and Richarlison getting on the scoresheet that day.
