Mark Lawrenson has predicted that Jurgen Klopp’s glorious Liverpool career will come to a very sudden, abrupt end.
The German manager delighted Liverpool supporters last week by signing a contract extension, committing himself to the Reds until the year 2026.
His earlier contract ran until 2024 and there was a lot of talk that the former Borussia Dortmund boss would call it quits once that deal expired.
However, the 54-year-old clearly has a long-term plan at Anfield, hence his decision to extend his contract.
But Anfield legend Lawrenson believes that Klopp will decide to end this exceptional Liverpool era at the drop of a hat, claiming that one day he will realise he’s achieved enough.
He told Stadium Astro: “I tell you what, he’ll walk in one day and walk. I think he’s just one of those guys that when he thinks he’s done it, it’s just like ‘okay, it’s time to go’. One day he will have had enough. You don’t know the pressure he’s under day in, day out.”
Is Lawrenson right?
Who knows. Who cares.
Whatever happens, Klopp, who has won a Champions League and Premier League on Merseyside, won’t be reaching this sudden epiphany for a number of years yet.
And for the moment, nobody at Liverpool will be looking too far ahead.
That’s because the Reds may yet win an unprecedented quadruple this season.
Klopp’s side are top of the Premier League on goal difference from Manchester City – who face Newcastle at the Etihad this evening – and they have a Champions League and FA Cup final with Real Madrid and Chelsea on the horizon.
it’s comforting to know Klopp will be sticking around a while longer, but nobody affiliated with Liverpool will be thinking beyond this season, due to its importance, and that’s as true of the manager as it is anybody.
