Mark Lawrenson says one ‘really good’ Leeds player has simply ‘not had a good season’

Speaking to OTB, Mark Lawrenson has been discussing Leeds United and some of their playing staff amid fears of relegation.

The Whites look as though they could go down, and as with any relegated side, there’s a chance that some of their players could be offered an immediate return to the Premier League.

You’d have to imagine that the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Raphinha and Patrick Bamford would quickly find another Premier League side to join, but according to Lawrenson, beyond that there aren’t many Leeds players who will be picked up.

One player Lawrenson would consider as a potential option for other top-flight sides is Luke Ayling, but even then, the pundit says that the defender has not had a good season.

Lawrenson gave his view on which players would be poached if Leeds went down and he spoke about Ayling.

“There wouldn’t be many, but you look at someone like the right-back Ayling. I think he’s a really good player and he can play at centre-back as well, but he’s not had a good season,” Lawrenson said.

Regressed

Ayling has certainly regressed for Leeds this season.

Last year the defender was a swashbuckling right-back who was making more progressive moves than almost anybody else in the Premier League, but this term, he’s played in a much more reserved manner.

Ayling has seemingly lost a lot of confidence, and sadly, he’s also made plenty of defensive errors.

We can only hope he’ll be reinvigorated under a new manager, because at his best, the right-back is an absolute joy to watch.
