Speaking to Off The Ball, Mark Lawrenson has been discussing Andy Murray after a remarkable win at the Australian Open on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old came through a remarkable five-set clash against Matteo Berretini on Tuesday after years of injury issues, and Lawrenson was just blown away by the former Wimbledon champion.

The football pundit hailed Murray for being a fighter, quipping that Liverpool could probably do with someone who has a similar mentality to him in their team against Wolves in the Carabao Cup.

Liverpool could do with Murray

Lawrenson discussed the Tennis star and how some Liverpool players could do with taking a page out of his book.

“I met Andy Murray a few years ago on a flight and I sat next to him. He was only 16 or 17. I saw this lad come down with all of these racquets and I said ‘you must be a tennis player’ and he looked at me like ‘you moron’. But he’s a really nice fella,” Lawrenson said.

“I always thought maybe 18 months ago that it would be the end of Andy Murray with his hip injuries and etcetera. He’s a fighter isn’t he? He really seriously is a fighter. Maybe he could play for Liverpool tonight against Wolves.”

Mentality monster

For years Liverpool’s squad were known as mentality monsters, but that seems to have gone away this season for some reason.

The Reds need some inspiration, and they should look at a sportsman like Murray as a pointer as to what they should be doing going forwards.

Murray hasn’t let any of his huge setbacks in recent years deter him from giving it his all at the biggest tournaments, and Liverpool need to keep on pushing forwards in the same way Murray has in recent years.

The Reds need to rediscover that level of fight if they’re to get back to their best.
