Speaking to Off The Ball, Mark Lawrenson has, once again, been waxing-lyrical about Thiago Alcantara and his passing.
It’s no secret that Lawrenson absolutely adores Thiago. He’s named him as his favourite Liverpool player in the past, and he’s even gone as far as to say that he worships at his feet.
To be fair, we can absolutely understand why the pundit loves the midfielder so much. On his day, Thiago is probably the most technically gifted footballer in the Premier League, and he’s a constant joy to watch – and he showcased that again at the weekend.
Indeed, while Thiago only played 45 minutes against Wolves, he made his mark during that time, grabbing a fantastic assist for Sadio Mane’s equaliser with an exquisite back-heel.
According to Lawrenson, there isn’t a single player in the Premier League, other than Kevin De Bruyne, who could have pulled that off.
What’s been said?
Lawrenson heaped praise upon Thiago and his passing ability.
“Well what about that goal he created? There’s nobody apart from De Bruyne in the Premier League would even think about trying to pull that one off. His passing, it’s not just great, it’s just, he hits the ball into you really quickly and if you’re a decent player it’s easier to control when it comes in quickly,” Lawrenson said.

One of a kind
Lawrenson says that only De Bruyne would try that pass against Wolves, but in all honesty, we’re not sure he’d even spot that ball.
De Bruyne, these days, prefers to run towards goal and be on the ball rather than play a delicate flicked through ball, while Thiago is a lot more deft with his creativity.
As Lawrenson says, there aren’t many players in the world who can do what Thiago does, and the reality is that he may be one of a kind.
We can only hope that the Spanish magician is fit and available for this weekend’s Champions League final.
