Speaking to Off The Ball, Mark Lawrenson has shared what he observed outside of Tottenham’s changing room after the game at Anfield over the weekend.

The Liverpool legend was at the game and after the match he headed down the tunnel, presumably to do something linked to either his punditry or his ambassadorial duties at Anfield.

Lawrenson lingered for a little while outside of the Spurs changing room, and he says he was absolutely staggered by the number of staff members Tottenham brought to Anfield, claiming that there were way over 30 members of staff heading to the dressing room after the game.

What’s been said?

Lawrenson shared what he saw.

“Speaking of staff, I was waiting to go down the tunnel after the match and I was counting, because it was right by the Tottenham changing room, the number of staff they have. It was like 30-odd people and I was like ‘what do they all do?’ It was just absolutely amazing, it’s just staff after staff after staff, I thought ‘wow, what a wage bill they must have’. Liverpool might be the same but I wasn’t stood outside their changing room,” Lawrenson said.

Modern football

Back in Lawrenson’s day, you may have had four or five staff members with you on a matchday, but these days, there is a lot more going on.

From physios and sports scientists to set-piece coaches and analysts, there are so many backroom jobs in football these days as teams look to pick up even the most marginal of gains.

Tottenham are an elite club, so it stands to reason that they leave no stone unturned behind the scenes, and in order to do that, they need a lot of staff members covering a lot of bases.
