Mark Lawrenson was impressed with the West Ham United star’s performance against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend.
Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson jokingly suggested on BBC Sport on Sunday afternoon (February 21, 14:40) that Dimitri Payet could have earned a bigger contract at West Ham United had he waited until the game against Blackburn Rovers.
Payet, who joined West Ham from French club Marseille in the summer of 2015, put pen to paper on a new deal with the Premier League side on February 11.
According to The Mirror, the France international attacking midfielder is now on a weekly wage of £125,000.
During Sunday afternoon’s FA Cup fifth-round tie between Blackburn and West Ham at Ewood Park, former Liverpool defender Lawrenson joked on BBC Sport (February 21, 14:40) that Payet could have earned a better deal had he waited a bit longer.
“What a fantastic skill for Payet to have though, it is almost like taking a penalty for him,” said Lawrenson while discussing the 28-year-old’s first goal against Blackburn. “Maybe if he waited another week to sign his new contract he could have got £140k a week.”
Payet was superb against Blackburn, his two goals helping West Ham get the better of the Championship team 5-1 in the FA Cup tie.
The 28-year-old has been one of the best players in the Premier League so far this season.
The former Lille man has scored seven goals and created 67 chances in 19 league appearances so far this campaign.
Payet has a pass accuracy of 82% and a shot accuracy of 72%, and has won two headers, 47 dribbles and 12 tackles.
