Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrensen poked fun at Sheffield Wednesday during an appearance on this week’s The Ref Show.
Wednesday, who have endured yet another slow start to a Championship campaign, were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Bristol City on Saturday.
The Owls failed to register a single shot on target, but could have had two penalties following challenges on Jordan Rhodes and Barry Bannan.
Nevertheless, they did record a welcome clean sheet – which was only their third in the league this season.
Discussing events at Hillsborough alongside former referee – and Wednesday supporter – Keith Hackett, Lawrenson quipped: “That’s alright for Wednesday – a nil!”
Then, after Hackett delivered his verdict on match official Tony Harrington’s performance – which was not exactly a ringing endorsement – the 60-year-old added: “I’m just laughing at the fact that Sheffield Wednesday have got 17 strikers and drew a blank.”
Wednesday only used four of their strikers against the Robins, with Jordan Rhodes and Gary Hooper starting and Lucas Joao and Steven Fletcher entering the fray as second-half substitutes.
That meant no place in the squad for Atdhe Nuhiu (left out), Fernando Forestieri (injured) or George Hirst (exiled after failing to agree a new contract), while Sam Winnall is currently on loan at Derby County.
Carlos Carvalhal’s side sit 10th in the Championship, though only a point worse off than they were at the same stage last season – which they ended in fourth place.
