Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has told PA Sport, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo, that the Reds should offer former captain Steven Gerrard a player-coaching role.

Gerrard left MLS side LA Galaxy after two seasons with the California franchise, and there has already been a great deal of speculation about what might be his next move.

Whilst he has been linked by many outlets with a reunion with former Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers at Celtic, rumours have predictably sprung up that he may return to his boyhood Merseyside club in some capacity.

It has been suggested in some quarters that the former England captain’s playing days may now be over, and that he should instead undergo a full transition into coaching.

Though Lawrenson agrees that coaching should now be Gerrard’s focus, he does not necessarily believe that the 36-year-old should completely turn his back on the idea of playing just yet.

When asked about a potential Liverpool return for Gerrard, Lawrenson said, via the Echo: “They will not have to pay him fortunes – they can tell him if they need him he’ll play. The most important thing in all this, though, is that he would not be seen as a threat by Jurgen Klopp if he was on the coaching staff.

“He would be brilliant to have around the club because he would be in awe of Klopp, s

o that is just not a worry. I am sure Klopp would love it too – the only effects would be positive.

“He has already coached Liverpool’s under-16 team for a while in 2015 and really enjoyed it. If you are an under-16 and getting coached by Stevie G, then how good is that?”

Gerrard made 710 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions in a 17-year career on Merseyside, and there surely cannot be a single Reds fan who would not welcome their hero back with open arms.

It remains to be seen whether he will be offered a role by the club, and what that role may encompass.
