Liverpool were beaten 3-0 at Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

Pundit and ex-Reds star Mark Lawrenson has told BBC Sport he believes defeat, or at least the manner of it, could be a positive for Liverpool.

Lawrenson says he feels Jurgen Klopp’s team selection will be made more straightforward this weekend against Newcastle United, because the Champions League is now an outside shot.

He said: “This will be a tough game for Liverpool, because they will have to break Newcastle down.

“It might actually help that they lost 3-0 to Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, because it means they won’t have one eye on Tuesday’s second leg any more.”

BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson looks on as prepares for the start of the npower Championship match between Queens Park Rangers and Leeds United at Loftus Road on May 7, 2011 in London, England.

Liverpool can’t afford not to win against Newcastle this weekend, or their title dream could be over.

As it is the Reds need Manchester City to slip up against Leicester City on Monday night.

Liverpool can apply pressure by beating Newcastle at the weekend.

The players will want to show a reaction after losing to Barcelona and their determination to make up for a disappointing result could see them through.
