Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-1 to the Reds at Anfield on Tuesday.
Mark Lawrenson has told BBC Sport that Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kieran Trippier was culpable for Liverpool’s opener at Anfield last night.
The Reds edged out Tottenham 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup.
Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring on nine minutes by latching on to Marko Grujic’s ball across the area and stabbing into the roof of the net.
Sturridge, who scored again in the second half, had nipped in behind the Spurs defender en route to finding the net, and Lawrenson says the former Burnley man was caught napping.
“It was a good break by Liverpool,” he told BBC Sport. “It was slightly fortuitous but Sturridge was the only player on the pitch that gambled. Trippier was caught sleeping.”
Vincent Janssen threw Tottenham a lifeline by converting a penalty with 14 minutes to go, but the damage was already done as Spurs suffered their second defeat of the season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side remain unbeaten in the Premier League, and the Lilywhites host champions Leicester City at White Hart Lane on Saturday as they look to bounce back from Tuesday’s disappointment on Merseyside.
Pochettino obviously had one eye on the weekend by naming wholesale changes to his first XI, with Tripper’s replacement of Kyle Walker one of 10 changes by the Argentine manager – one less than Jurgen Klopp who made 11.
