Mark Lawrenson has suggested on BBC Sport that Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk is starting to look ordinary.

The Liverpool legend, though, does not seem to blame Van Dijk, suggesting that playing with different players around him is affecting his game.

The Reds’ recent results and performances have not been great, and there have also been injuries to the likes of Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and Dejan Lovren.

Van Dijk – who earns £150,000 per week as salary, according to Spotrac.com – is one of the best central defenders in the world, and has made 25 appearances in the Premier League and has played in six games in the Champions League for Liverpool so far this season, according to WhoScored.

Lawrenson wrote on BBC Sport: “So Jurgen Klopp has lost that shield a little bit and even Virgil van Dijk has started to look a little bit ordinary because there are so many different people around him.”
