Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand has seemingly criticised Mark Hughes’ tactics, while praising Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Ryan Bertrand of Southampton runs with the ball during the Premier League match between AFC Bournemouth and Southampton at Vitality Stadium on December 3, 2017 in Bournemouth, England.

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand’s comments in the Daily Echo look damning on previous manager Mark Hughes.

Southampton have been much improved this season since Hughes departed and Ralph Hasenhuttl took over.

The Saints are now edging towards confirming their Premier League safety for another season.

And Bertrand’s comments on the changes that Hasenhuttl has made do not make for pretty reading for Hughes.

“The manager has come in and has given us an identity. He has given us a clear style of play and doesn’t leave any stone unturned,” Bertrand said.

“It’s a real pleasure to go to the field like that and not have people questioning each other what to do.

“When there is an argument, they are genuine arguments because everyone knows their role and will know if they haven’t done something right.

Ralph Hasenhuttl the head coach

“If you were to ask 100 people what Southampton’s style of play was, the answers would all be similar.

“It would be that we are a high pressing team, very competitive and play some good football. Before, it might have been adrift.”

Bertrand has already seemingly taken one dig at Hughes previously, when he made a social media post soon after Hughes departed, as reported by HITC at the time.

The Southampton left-back is only just coming back into the team again after injury, but he has impressed in recent weeks.

Southampton beat Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend to strengthen their bid for survival.

Hasenhuttl’s side are next in action on Friday evening, when they take on Liverpool.
