Arsenal saw off Aston Villa 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Ex-Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has told the Daily Mail that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal for Arsenal against Aston Villa shouldn’t have stood.
Arsenal were looking to see off newly-promoted Villa at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, but fell behind to a John McGinn goal, and then saw Ainsley Maitland-Niles sent off for two yellow cards.
The Gunners got back into the game through a Nicolas Pepe, and whilst Wesley quickly put Villa back in front, Arsenal did claim all three points through Calum Chambers and Aubameyang.
Arsenal certainly got out of jail with that late win, but it’s now emerging that Aubameyang’s winner for the Gunners actually shouldn’t have stood.
Aubameyang’s goal came direct from a free kick, but Chambers was stood within one metre of the Aston Villa wall, obscuring goalkeeper Tom Heaton’s view.
That’s no longer allowed, and big-name referee Clattenburg has suggested that VAR should have checked the goal and spotted that Chambers was committing an offence.
Clattenburg added that an indirect free kick should have been awarded to Villa, meaning Dean Smith’s side can feel aggrieved to have left with nothing in controversial fashion, just as they did at Crystal Palace.
“The goal should have been disallowed,” said Clattenburg. “An offence has occurred just before a goal is scored, so VAR should be checking it, in my opinion. Chambers was within one metre at the taking of the free-kick. Therefore the goal should have been disallowed and indirect free-kick awarded to Villa,” he added.
