Everton suffered a 2-1 loss to Manchester United on Sunday.
Mark Clattenburg has claimed in his Daily Mail column that referee Jon Moss made the wrong decision by awarding Manchester United a penalty during Sunday’s 2-1 win over Everton.
Paul Pogba opened the scoring when he tapped home after Jordan Pickford saved his penalty, which was awarded after Idrissa Gueye for fouling Anthony Martial.
However, replays showed the former Aston Villa star making contact with the ball, before ex-Monaco star Martial flung himself in the air in a bid to win a penalty – which Pogba eventually dispatched.
But former Premier League referee Clattenburg believes Gueye won the ball fairly, disagreeing with Moss as Everton suffered a 2-1 loss to Jose Mourinho’s side.
“That was not a penalty,” he said. “Gueye clearly got a touch on the ball and you could see it change direction. After the Everton midfielder won the ball, Anthony Martial exaggerated his movement to make it look like a penalty.
“With his assistant on the far side unable to help him, referee Jon Moss would have wanted to get a better angle to assess the challenge.”
Martial himself gave United a two-nil lead with an exquisite finish from the edge of the box, before Gylfi Sigurdsson scored from the penalty spot to set up an interesting end to the match.
Everton remain in ninth place, and will be looking to get back to winning ways against Brighton on Saturday afternoon at Goodison Park.
