West Ham United were denied a strong penalty claim against Burnley on Saturday.
Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has criticised Roger East for failing to award West Ham United a penalty during Saturday’s 4-2 win over Burnley at the London Stadium.
West Ham youngster Grady Diangana was caught by Steven Defour in the box, but East failed to penalise Clarets midfielder Steven Defour for the challenge.
Sean Dyche praised Diangana for his honesty after the game, before the Burnley boss then admitted that it should have been a penalty.
And Clattenburg has intimated to The Daily Mail that his former colleague was not fit enough to keep up with the pace of the game.
He told The Daily Mail: “I am shocked that West Ham were not awarded a penalty when Grady Diangana was felled by Steven Defour.
“Sean Dyche praised Diangana for not making a meal of it but that is not why it was not given.
“When a player is racing into the box with a defender in pursuit, the referee must be as close as possible but Roger East’s positioning was wrong.
“This was only his second Premier League match after failing a fitness test. A lack of games makes you rusty.”
Fortunately for West Ham the lack of penalty didn’t matter in the end, with Manuel Pellegrini’s side picking up their first win since September.
But it very nearly did cost the Hammers, given that the hosts needed an 84th minute goal from Felipe Anderson to move 3-2 ahead, before Javier Hernandez added a fourth late on.
The Irons moved up to 11th in the Premier League table as a result of the win.
