New Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is ready to start talking about transfer business at Ibrox, suggests Mark Allen.
Speaking to Herald Scotland, Rangers’ Director of Football Mark Allen has intimated that manager Steven Gerrard is ready to start discussing the club’s transfer window, after being appointed on Friday.
Gerrard signed a four-year deal as Rangers manager yesterday, replacing Graeme Murty at Ibrox.
The Gers were thumped 5-0 by Old Firm rivals Celtic last weekend as Brendan Rodgers’s side clinched a seventh successive Scottish Premiership title.
If the Ibrox outfit are to bridge the significant gap between them and the all-conquering Hoops – who could win back-to-back domestic trebles this month – then recruitment will be of paramount importance.
Gerrard and Allen will work together on transfer targets for the summer ahead, and the Gers chief has suggested that the new boss has “quite clearly” told him that he is ready to begin that discussion.
He told Herald Scotland: “I think we are in early days. Obviously, part of the function I take responsibility for is constantly looking for improvement. Every single football club that is out there is constantly looking to improve its playing staff. There is no difference there.
“In fairness to Steven, we haven’t had that chance to sit down and go through it in detail, but Steven has said quite clearly that that comes next.”
Gerrard will inherit some excellent players and if he and Allen can supplement those by improving other parts of the squad then Rangers could, in theory, push Celtic a lot closer next season.
