Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers made an inspired choice to re-sign Allan McGregor, but is the real hero behind his acquisition being overlooked?

Allan McGregor is all the rage at Rangers at the moment.
The former Scotland international has been receiving plenty of praise from Rangers fans and pundits alike for his heroics in last night’s Europa League trip to Maribor.
McGregor, who re-signed for the Gers earlier this summer, saved a 90th-minute penalty from Marcos Tavares to keep the score at 0-0, having also denied the Brazilian from point-blank range earlier.
Plenty of fans of the Ibrox side are raving about his capture and some are giving credit to manager Steven Gerrard for signing him.
But it looks more likely that Director of Football Mark Allen deserves a lot more of the credit for what is looking like something of a masterstroke.
Rangers were first linked to McGregor on April 25 [The Sun], when Graeme Murty was still in charge of the team, so it seems unlikely that Gerrard was a leading factor in landing him, even if he was at the club for 12 days before the former Hull City man officially joined.
Such is his profile, the 38-year-old definitely helped to lure many more targets to Ibrox this summer, but if McGregor is the best of their 11 signings so far then Allen deserves the bulk of credit.
