Newcastle United are said to be interested in the Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder.

According to the Daily Mirror, Newcastle United are interested in signing Mario Gotze from Borussia Dortmund, and if the Magpies are able to complete the deal then it would surely help to convince Rafael Benitez to stay.

Benitez just wants assurances that Newcastle will be able to build a squad capable of challenging for trophies, before committing his future to the Tynesiders.

And the addition of Gotze would go a long way to helping Newcastle start to look like a side capable of challenging for silverware.

Gotze’s injury record may be of some concern, but his talent simply cannot be questioned.

The Dortmund man scored the winning goal in the last World Cup final, and is regarded as one of Germany’s finest talents, when on song.

Gotze would be the highest profile signing Newcastle have brought in since Mike Ashley came to St. James’ Park.

And if Newcastle could show their ambition by snapping up Gotze this summer, then Benitez would surely be tempted to sign a new contract.
