Rashford continues to impress, but recent changes raise concerns back at Old Trafford

Marcus Rashford’s time at Barcelona has started well, but there are early signs that could have Manchester United worried about what comes next.

Rashford settled in quickly under Hansi Flick and became a reliable figure on the pitch. He’s been in good form, leading the assist charts in Spain alongside Lamine Yamal.

But in their recent 3-1 win over Atletico, there were signs of a shift that Man Utd won’t be happy to see.

Marcus Rashford’s role is becoming clear at Barcelona

It’s easy to forget that Marcus Rashford’s strong start at Barcelona came about due to a run of injuries within the squad.

Lewandowski’s spell on the sidelines was just one part of it, with Raphinha, Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez also missing time at different points in the season.

Rashford did well to step in during that stretch and made the most of his opportunity. But as those players returned to fitness, Flick was always likely to go back to his usual line-up.

Against Atletico, Rashford found himself back on the bench as Raphinha kept his place in the starting side. He came on in the 67th minute but faced more competition for minutes after fellow substitute Ferran Torres scored shortly after entering play.

Rashford is starting to settle into an “impact sub” role – something that doesn’t exactly match up with his salary or what Barca might end up paying if they make his move permanent.

Man Utd preparing for Rashford’s return

At one stage, Barcelona’s £25 million option to buy Marcus Rashford looked like it could be a steal, but that outcome is becoming less likely.

With the club still in financial trouble and Rashford clear about wanting to stay only at Barcelona, United may have little room to manoeuvre.

One scenario could see Rashford return to Old Trafford next summer, then push for another loan move back to Barcelona rather than entertain offers from elsewhere.

The club would have limited options given his contract runs until 2028. And with Ruben Amorim having already publicly excluded him from plans, it would put them in a tough spot.

The Catalan side seem well aware of this too. With other players returning and regaining their spots in the team, Rashford’s influence at the club has already started fading further into the background.

A repeat of last summer’s drawn-out saga seems increasingly likely if Rashford stands firm on only wanting a move back to Barcelona.
