England’s 4-2 victory over Croatia was the sort of World Cup opener that eased pressure around Thomas Tuchel’s squad. The first half was frantic, but the second-half performance looked closer to what this team can be.

With so much talent and Tuchel’s controversial call-up decisions, every detail was always going to be judged.

Rashford was one of the positives, coming off the bench to score, but there were concerns about his fitness afterwards. Now, an update has emerged ahead of the match against Ghana.

BBC Sport reported that England’s medical team are checking on Rashford after he complained of muscle discomfort following the Croatia game.

He replaced Anthony Gordon, played around 18 minutes and scored England’s fourth goal in Dallas.

The timing of the soreness was frustrating. The 28-year-old had delivered exactly the kind of impact Tuchel would have wanted from the bench, stretching Croatia late and putting the result beyond doubt.

However, there is optimism that the issue will not stop him being involved against Ghana on Tuesday.

That would be important for England’s attacking depth. Rashford may not be a guaranteed starter, but his direct running and ability to score from wide areas make him a valuable option.

Beyond that, Anthony Gordon had an underwhelming display, and the former Man United star could be close to joining the starting XI.
