Tottenham star Edwards was reportedly a target for Newcastle in June.
Newcastle United were linked with Tottenham Hotspur star Marcus Edwards back in June, and Rafa Benitez must now make a move after the teenage star’s price tag was revealed.
The Evening Chronicle claimed last month that Newcastle were “keeping tabs” on the 19-year-old playmaker, who struggled to show just what he is all about on loan at Norwich City last term.
Indeed, the young star was loaned to the Championship club for the second half of the 2017-18 season but was given just one six-minute substitute appearances for Norwich under Daniel Farke.
With his reputation taking a knock, Edwards’ future at Tottenham now looks to be coming to an end, especially after Football London have claimed that Spurs will accept offers of £5million for the youngster.
Though Edwards is yet to show just why he is being considered one of England’s brightest prospects, £5million is certainly worth the risk of seeing whether Edwards can further his potential on Tyneside.
It was all going so well for Edwards during 2017-18. During the first half of the season, he scored eight goals and laid on five assists in 16 games for Spurs Under-23 side and Under-18 side in the UEFA Youth League.
Newcastle currently have Ayoze Perez in the number 10 role, while The Toon are likely to bring another player to Tyneside in that position. Even if they do, Edwards will have a much higher chance of breaking into the first team at Newcastle.
Though Benitez is renowned for signing high-profile players in their peak, he would be foolish not to meet Tottenham’s £5million price tag for Edwards this summer.
