Marcus Antonsson is supposedly likely to leave Leeds this summer
A recent report from the Daily Express suggested that Marcus Antonsson was likely to quit Leeds this summer after a frustrating first year at Elland Road which saw him score just one league goal.
While there will be a portion of supporters who may be disappointed if the report turns out to be true and the Swede does move on – it could surely be argued that the change of system early in the season and Chris Wood’s stunning form meant that the 26-year-old was not given a fair chance – it is perhaps fair to say that not everyone will necessarily be disappointed.
Unfortunately for Antonsson, his struggles to make the grade for the Championship side may perhaps leave the door open for Lee Erwin to be given a second chance to justify the club’s decision to sign him back in 2015.
The Scotsman is still awaiting his first goal for the Whites having made 11 league appearances – most of which came from the substitutes’ bench – and supporters would be forgiven for writing him off making an impact for Leeds at any stage.
Could Lee Erwin be the biggest beneficiary if Antonsson does leave?
However, the latter stages of Erwin’s loan spell at Oldham Athletic this season not only helped the Latics pull off a miraculous run to fairly comfortable safety having been bottom of the table at the turn of the year, but also may have given him a chance to salvage his Whites career.
His final 10 games of the campaign saw him score six goals, and while that form may not inspire Monk to consider him to be a rival for Wood, he may perhaps now be willing to give him an opportunity in pre-season, especially if Antonsson does depart and leave a void that Monk needs to fill.
