Marcus Antonsson has told Hallandsposten that he was “sick and disappointed” after being left on the bench for Leeds United’s clash with Liverpool last season.

Leeds exited the League Cup at the quarter-final stage after losing 2-0 to the Reds at Anfield.

The Swedish striker had played a prominent role in helping the Whites reach that far, scoring a last-minute equaliser in a first-round trip to Fleetwood, and then winning a penalty in extra time, before also scoring in a fourth-round clash at home to Norwich.

One week before the last-eight clash with the Premier League giants, the 26-year-old netted a hat-trick in an Under-23 game with Huddersfield after struggling for first-team opportunities under then-manager Garry Monk at the time.

And the Swedish forward – an unused substitute at Anfield – has revealed in an interview in his homeland that he was a little upset to miss out.

“When we met Fleetwood from League One, I played and scored a nice f**king goal by turning and slamming the ball into the top corner,” he told Hallandsposten.

“In extra time, I won a penalty which made it 2-1, but they equalised, but I scored my penalty in the shootout and we progressed. Then we met Norwich and I started and scored again. I was very much involved in our cup campaign.

“Then I scored a hat-trick against Huddersfield in an Under-23 game, but I still did not play against Liverpool. I was sick and disappointed.”

Chris Wood, who started ahead of Antonsson that night, had 12 goals under his belt at that point of the season, so you could argue that Monk had to pick his best team.

Antonsson was virtually frozen out of the senior squad for the second half of last season under Monk, who gave him nine minutes of Championship football for Leeds in 2017.

But the former Kalmar man, who joined last summer, will hope that Monk’s shock exit last month gives him a clean slate with regards to his career at Elland Road.
