Marcus Antonsson has thanked Leeds United fans for their continued support, even though he isn’t at the club this season.

Antonsson remains a Leeds player but Thomas Christiansen sent him on loan to League One side Blackburn Rovers in the summer after being deemed surplus to requirements at Elland Road.

But the Swedish hitman is enjoying his spell at Ewood Park, grabbing seven goals in 15 league outings – and some of those came when he was playing in a wide role.

Fans of the West Yorkshire side are consistently praising him on Twitter when he scores for Rovers, and the 27-year-old striker says it’s great to still have their backing.

He told Kvallsposten: “You cannot really avoid [hearing from fans] when you have Twitter.

“It has been very positive from the Leeds and Blackburn fans. You have a hard time at Leeds and then it is still good that the fans are behind you.”

Antonsson did indeed have a hard time last season.

Garry Monk, who spent £2 million on signing him from Kalmar, effectively exiled him in the second half of the campaign, having only scored once in 16 Championship outings during the first half of the season.

Chris Wood’s terrific form made it near impossible for the Swede to enjoy a lengthy run in the side, but the fact that Monk stopped naming in matchday squads entirely will have disappointed him.

It remains to be seen if Antonsson has a future at Leeds. He is a likable player, but the truth is that he has come nowhere near to justifying his transfer fee and it wouldn’t be a surprise if United severed ties completely in the summer.
