The Watford manager was linked with the Everton job before Sam Allardyce got the role.

As reported by the Express, Everton moved for Sam Allardyce after failing in their pursuit of Marco Silva, but the 40-year-old was not what the Toffees needed at this stage in their history.

Anyone who saw Silva’s Watford side take on Manchester United on Tuesday evening will know that his free-flowing football, with little care for what happens at the opposite end of the pitch, would have only made things worse at Goodison Park.

Everton were shipping goals at an alarming rate prior to Allardyce’s appointment and what the Toffees need now is to build from the back, ensuring stability rather than the kind of maverick football that saw Watford ship four against a United side that could have easily scored eight.

There is no doubting Silva’s ability as a manager, but with Everton in free-fall before their 4-0 win against West Ham United, they needed a manager who could keep them solid at the back and end the kind of humiliating performances that have been too commonplace on Merseyside in recent months.

Allardyce is that man, an experienced, no-nonsense boss who can get the best out of these Everton players and ensure they are not scrapping for their top-flight future in the second half of the campaign.

In time Silva could yet arrive at Everton, but it was never the right time for a manager whose attacking instincts far outweigh the importance of a solid defence.
