Marco Silva has admitted that Leeds United were worthy winners of last nights’s EFL Cup move.

The Whites moved into the fourth round of the competition with a penalty shootout win over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The Londoners blinked first during sudden death and Leeds recorded a 6-5 win on penalties.

Clinical efforts from Rodrigo, Daniel James, Kalvin Phillips, Junior Firpo, Joe Gelhardt and Stuart McKinstry secured United’s passage into the next stage, after the game ended 0-0 in regulation.

And Silva has admitted via The Yorkshire Evening Post that Leeds were the more ‘competent’ team from 12 yards.

He said: “During the penalties they were more competent than us, it’s not just a matter of luck or not.”

Platform?

Yes it was on penalties, but it was still a victory and Leeds need to use it as a platform to build.

There was a lot of talk about whether Marcelo Bielsa’s side could continue to pull up trees this season, after a brilliant first year back in the Premier League in which they finished ninth.

And so far they have failed, having won none of their first five Premier League matches.

But you get the impression that this Leeds side just need one victory – in any competition – and it could offset a strong run of form in the Premier League.

Next up for Bielsa and co is a visit of West Ham United on Saturday.
