Everton suffered yet another defeat at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Marco Silva has suggested to Sky Sports that he is powerless to transform Everton’s fortunes if his players do not implement his pre-match plans.
The Toffees’ season took another turn for the worse on Saturday when Silva’s side lost 3-1 to Wolves at Goodison Park.
Everton were booed off at the end following what was another shoddy display, with the unmarked Raul Jimenez heading Wanderers into a 2-1 half-time lead just before the break.
The Merseyside outfit have now only won one of their last six games at home, but the former Watford manager tells Sky Sports that if his troops do not implement what they worked on in training then there is little he can do.
He said, when asked about his side’s frailty from set-pieces: “I am 100 per cent sure, if you do the things normal and the things we plan and work on, of course the things will be different.
“At that moment it was clear what we had to do, we knew, we worked on it and analysed, and in that moment we have to be aggressive and do what we planned and nothing more.
“And if you do, I am 100 per cent sure that those things do not happen again.”
It comes across as if Silva is blaming the players, but the buck stops with him.
If Everton aren’t heeding his pre-match advice then that still falls on him, not the playing staff, and publicly suggesting that his players are at fault could backfire in a big way.
The Portuguese coach is already under plenty of pressure and now is not the time for division, but unity.
