Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa has told Leeds Live that Tyler Roberts has to improve to establish himself in the starting lineup.

Roberts was in the starting lineup against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League last Friday evening.

Bielsa has suggested that the 22-year-old, who can play as a striker, winger or attacking midfielder, will start against Southampton at Elland Road in the Premier League on Tuesday evening.

Ahead of the game, the Argentine coach has said that Roberts need to improve and has outlined the areas where the Wales international needs to get better.

Bielsa told Leeds Live: “You summed it up a little bit. What Tyler needs is to play with continuity, but not because anyone is missing but because he deserves to keep his place.

“Depending on this we will see if he is able to consolidate himself as a Premier League player or not. The game that he played the other day, should allow him to continue in the team but to consolidate himself in the team he needs to improve.

“He needs to be able to create more danger and generate fear from the opponents. The game the other day was an excellent first step. But he needs to keep on evolving.”

Getting better

Roberts has had injury problems at Leeds, and the 22-year-old is now a squad player at the club.

The 22-year-old has made three starts and 10 substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Whites so far this season, providing one assist in the process, according to WhoScored.

During the 2019-20 campaign, the attacker made 12 starts and 11 substitute appearances in the Championship for the West Yorkshire outfit, scoring four goals and providing one assist in the process, according to WhoScored.

The Wales international needs to work hard on his game and improve in the areas where Bielsa wants him to.
