Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has told Leeds Live that there was no injury to Helder Costa before last night’s game against Newcastle United.

The Whites played out an entertaining clash with Newcastle on Wednesday night, and had to come from a goal down with Jeff Hendrick opening the scoring.

Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo put Leeds in front, only for Ciaran Clark to equalise for Newcastle, but Leeds went goal crazy in the final 15 minutes with Stuart Dallas, Ezgjan Alioski and Jack Harrison to seal a 5-2 win.

Bielsa will be delighted with such a strong attacking display, but there will now be question marks over the role of Helder Costa.

The Portuguese winger came on at half time for Harrison against West Ham United on Friday night, but wasn’t in the squad at all last night.

Fellow winger Ian Carlos Poveda was on the bench, as were Pablo Hernandez and Tyler Roberts, meaning there was no place for £16m ace Costa.

To go from half-time substitute to excluded from the squad isn’t ideal for Costa, and Bielsa has now confirmed there was no injury that kept Costa – offering just three words on the matter, but it was merely a selection issue that resulted in him sitting on the sidelines.

“No, no injury,” said Bielsa, meaning Costa now faces a battle to return to the squad ahead of this weekend’s trip to face Manchester United.
