Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa has explained to Leeds Live why Pablo Hernandez did not feature against Middlesbrough.

The Whites played out a goalless draw with Middlesbrough at Elland Road in the Championship on Friday evening.

Hernandez, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or as a winger, did not feature in the match.

The 33-year-old Spaniard has been one of the best players for Leeds so far this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists in five Championship appearances for the West Yorkshire outfit, according to WhoScored.

Leeds head coach Bielsa has explained why Hernandez did not feature against Tony Pulis’s Middlesbrough at Elland Road in the Championship on Friday evening.

Bielsa told Leeds Live when asked about Hernandez’s absence: “He could have played, but we would have taken a risk to put him in the starting XI.

“He was tired from a muscular point of view. And we didn’t have enough time to ensure he wouldn’t worsen.”

Pablo Hernandez of Leeds United arrives for the Sky Bet Championship match between Swansea City and Leeds United at the Liberty Stadium on August 21, 2018 in Swansea, Wales.

Missing Pablo Hernandez

Hernandez is one of the best and most creative midfielders in the Championship, and Leeds did miss the Spaniard on Friday evening.

Middlesbrough, though, were solid and organised, and it would have been hard even for Hernandez to break them down.

Leeds will be pleased with how the season is going for them so far.
