Marcelo Bielsa admits Leeds United problem is getting worse

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has come in for fierce criticism over his failure to finish chances presented to him.

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has told the Yorkshire Evening Post that his side’s season has been ‘strange’ so far, as their performances have all been of a similar quality.

Bielsa has a squad of players that he trusts at Elland Road now, and he feels that his back-up players are of similar quality to the ones in his first-team.

No matter who Leeds have put on the field, their creative output has often been of similar quality.

The Whites regularly dominant games, and have far more chances than their opponents.

However, Leeds have been undone on occasion by their prolificacy in front of goal.

And Bielsa admits that while he has seen improvements in his side’s defence, Leeds are actually even more wasteful in forward areas than they were last campaign.

“This is a strange season for us, we are regular in the players we are putting on the pitch, not just the XI players but also in the level of the performance for the players who play,” Bielsa said.

“Most of the matches we have played in similar performance without high levels but also without a low level, we are defending better this season but last season we had a problem but we needed between four and five chances to score one goal, in this moment we need more then seven chances to score.

“It is the highest percentage of all the Championship, for this season I give value to the production of our team because when one team needs seven chances to score that is linked with one of the teams at the bottom of the table – this average.”

Many supporters have blamed Leeds’ lack of ruthlessness on the performances of Patrick Bamford.

Bamford has suffered a long goal drought, and his place in Leeds’ line-up is now under serious pressure.

Eddie Nketiah, who is yet to start, now has more goals for Leeds this season than Bamford, and scored the equaliser from the substitutes’ bench against Preston North End in midweek.

Bielsa has great faith in Bamford though, and has suggested that he will start tomorrow when Leeds take on Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
