Everton don’t need another error-prone centre-half – and Wolfsburg’s Marcel Tisserand has looked exactly that in recent weeks.
Much has been made of Everton’s rather toothless attack so far this season. In ten Premier League games, The Toffees have hit the back of the net just seven times with the absence of Romelu Lukaku leaving a gaping hole in their attack.
A dreadful defensive record, however, should be of equal concern. Only bottom of the table Crystal Palace have conceded more than Everton’s 21 goals so far in 2017/18. A lack of attacking threat at one end and a penchant for conceding sloppy goals at the other – it’s hardly a recipe for Champions League qualification.
The experienced duo of Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams are starting to look their age with mistakes creeping in while Michael Keane (below) has so far made a mockery of his £25 million price tag, per The Guardian.
Though it could be worse. At least none of the under-fire trio have given away a staggering five penalties since the start of the 2016/17 season. That is the rather unflattering statistic hanging over the head of Wolfsburg centre-back Marcel Tisserand – a man Everton reportedly made a bid for in the summer.
French outlet RMC Sport claimed in July that The Toffees were willing to pay £2.65 million for Tisserand, who had forged a solid reputation in the Bundesliga despite suffering relegation with FC Ingolstadt last season. Instead, the 24-year-old DR Congo international moved to Wolfsburg in the summer but he has hardly made a positive impression.
A clumsy challenge in the latter stages of Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga clash with Hoffenheim last week gifted Kerim Demirbay the chance to score from the spot – the second penalty Tisserand has given away since joining Wolfsburg and the fifth in just over a season.
It’s fair to say Everton could do without another error-prone centre-half.
