Everton’s Marcel Brands isn’t expecting ‘big’ things from the Toffees in January.

Everton’s Director of Football Marcel Brands has told an AGM, via Sky Sports, that he doesn’t envisage ‘big’ things for the club in regards to transfers this month, but hinted that additions will only happen if players are sold or loaned out.

The Toffees spent some £86 million on transfers last summer, but their pre-season recruits – including Richarlison, Yerry Mina, Lucas Digne and Andre Gomes – haven’t collectively had a huge impact at Everton.

Marco Silva’s side, who have won one of their last eight Premier League games, are 14 points off a top-four spot and sitting 11th in the table.

It hasn’t been a brilliant season as of yet for the Goodison Park side, and the former PSV director is reluctant to throw more money at the problem this month, insisting that his focus is on the summer transfer window – unless he offloads some personnel.

He said to the AGM, via Sky Sports: “We don’t want to let our best players go, also other clubs don’t. I’m more focused on the summer window than the January window.

“If we sell or loan players, then maybe we have to do something, and if we do something, it has to be good.”

It makes sense to wait until the summer from an Everton perspective.

Do fans of the Merseyside club want to see Brands held to ransom and pay over-the-odds for mediocre players this month, or preserve the budget for top-quality additions in June, July and August?

This season is more or less a write-off at this point and the Dutchman is right to focus on next term.
