Marc Wilmots has hit out at Belgium assistant manager Thierry Henry.
Speaking to Nieuwsblad, Former Belgium national team manager Marc Wilmots has slammed Thierry Henry for his dual role as Sky Sports pundit and assistant boss.
New Belgium manager Roberto Martinez appointed former Arsenal star Thierry Henry as his assistant last month and it has to be said that the decision from the Spaniard most certainly surprised quite a few people.
Nonetheless, Henry is regarded as one of the greatest strikers the game as ever seen and the Frenchman’s guidance can only have a positive impact on Belgium’s talented young attackers consisting of Romelu Lukaku, Divock Origi and Michy Batshuayi, among others.
Despite his new role with the Red Devils, Henry will be continuing with his highly-paid job as one of Sky Sports’ analysts and the dual responsibility has not pleased many in Belgium.
Ex-Belgium boss Wilmots is also not happy to see Henry taking on two jobs at the same time and has now gone on to blast the 39-year-old for showing ‘pure amateurism’.
Wilmots told Nieusblad: “You can’t work as a television commentator and work as a trainer for the national team. That’s pure amateurism. In Belgium I was against it.
“Should Bart Verhaeghe, president of Brugge and vice president of the Belgian FA, be involved? And Thierry Henry, analyst for Sky Sports and assistant coach?”
Henry’s involvement in the media meant that the Arsenal legend was forced to walk away from his post as the Gunners’ Under-18 coach this summer following a clash with Arsene Wenger, and it will be interesting to see if the Frenchman’s role at Sky will negatively affect his job with Belgium.
