Ajax have been linked with the Tottenham Hotspur pair recently.

Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld

Ajax Sporting Director Marc Overmars has refused to confirm or deny speculation that he wants to sign Tottenham Hotspur duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad reported on Sunday that the Dutch giants were plotting a double raid for the Tottenham defenders, who began their careers at Ajax.

Vertonghen turns 32 in less than a month, and Spurs will be obligated to sell Alderweireld if a bid of £25 million is received for the 30-year-old, who’s contracted until 2020.

But is the speculation accurate? Well Overmars didn’t confirm it – but he also didn’t deny it.

The former Arsenal winger told Fox Sports: “We have to be patient and see what the future holds.”

Going by his comments, it certainly sounds like it’s a prospect being discussed with the Eredivisie giants, who eliminated Real Madrid from the Champions League this month.

Both are getting on in years and although Vertonghen and Alderweireld are still exceptional for Tottenham, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino will have to look ahead to the future sooner or later.

At this stage, supporters of the North London side wouldn’t be shocked to lose Alderweireld, considering that he’s been the subject of so many transfer sagas, but losing a fan favourite such as Vertonghen as well would make it a bitter blow for them.
