The Dutchman has been linked with the director of football role at Arsenal in recent months.
Arsenal legend Marc Overmars sat down for an exclusive interview with Spanish publication AS, and suggested that he would try to sign Matthijs de Ligt immediately, if and when he becomes director of football at a different club.
The 45-year-old Dutchman is being target by Arsenal as a replacement for the recently departed Sven Mislintat, according to a report from the Mirror, so his comments on the 19-year-old centre-back will surely excite Gunners fans.
Overmars spoke to Spanish media outlet AS, and raved about the quality of Ajax ace De Ligt, suggesting that the teenager can play in any of the best six teams in world football:
“For me, De Ligt can play easily on any of the six best teams in the world right now. He has the power, the mentality, the heart. If I worked at another club, I would like to sign him immediately. We do not need to sell him, we do not need the money, but I know he will go to one of the big clubs [eventually].”
The Holland international would obviously be a sensational signing for Arsenal, if Overmars does in fact move to the Emirates and bring the Ajax ace with him.
Even if the 45-year-old is appointed as director of football at Arsenal, however, De Ligt’s £50 million value (Football.London) could prove to be a huge stumbling block for the north London outfit.
The Dutch teen really is a sensational player, and he seems to have all of the tools required to go on and become one of the best defenders in the world.
And should Arsenal manage to sign him, he would surely go on to become a legend at the Emirates.
