QPR have won only twice at home all season in the Championship.

QPR coach Marc Bircham has told talkSPORT that he and new manager Ian Holloway need to get the fans onside to improve the ‘dead’ atmosphere at Loftus Road.

Bircham, who turned out for The Hoops in his playing days before working with the youth team and development squad between 2009 and 2014, returned to the club earlier in the week to assist Ian Holloway as he too prepares to begin his second spell on the QPR coaching staff.

Holloway took over from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink recently with QPR equidistant between the relegation zone and the play-off places, and his first port of call will be to improve a dismal home record which has seen the club win only once in front of their home supporters since the opening day.

And Bircham believes this will be essential if they are to return Loftus Road to its reputation as one of the lower league’s most intimidating grounds.

“It’s nearly a sell out on Saturday against Norwich. We need the crowd to get behind the team,” the former Canada international told Hawksbee and Jacobs on talkSPORT, broadcast at 1pm on Thursday.

“I went to a few games recently as a fan and the atmosphere was dead. It was like they’d given up at Loftus Road, they weren’t getting behind the team. So we’ve got to give the team a bit of confidence and get the fans behind them again.”

Holloway spoke earlier in the day of the need to restore passion to a club who has failed to put together anything like a promotion push since their relegation from the Premier League in 2015, and the return of two respected figures will surely help get the fans onside.
