West Ham United boss Manuel Pellegrini has told Football.London that he was impressed with midfielder Jack Wilshere’s display against Southampton.

The Hammers played their final home game of the season on Saturday afternoon, hosting Southampton at the London Stadium in what proved to be a comfortable meeting.

Marko Arnautovic ended his goal drought in the first half, meeting Mark Noble’s through ball to fire home, and then headed home a scrappy second after the break.

Right back Ryan Fredericks capped off a fine performance with the third, driving forward before playing a one-two with Wilshere and scoring past Fraser Forster.

Three goals, three points and a clean sheet was the perfect way to send the home fans happy after a mixed season, and they’ll have been encouraged by Wilshere’s display.

Wilshere came on for the final 25 minutes as he looks to build up his fitness again, with the ex-Arsenal midfielder enduring even more injury woes this season.

Boss Pellegrini was impressed though, feeling that he saw just how good Wilshere can be in such a short space of time, and he’ll be hoping for more of the same next season.

“Jack Wilshere demonstrated how good he is as a player, he played well so I am happy with the squad,” said Pellegrini.
