The West Ham manager has not been set any specific targets this season.
West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini addressed the media yesterday, ahead of his side’s trip to Liverpool on Sunday, and responded when asked whether he has been given the brief of achieving European football this season by the board, as quoted by Football.London.
The Chilean took over at the London Stadium this summer, and has begun his tenure in earnest, bringing in nine new signings for somewhere in the region of £100 million, and many are backing the Hammers to make a real push for the top seven places this season.
The east London outfit endured a difficult campaign last season, eventually ending up in 13th spot in the table, so they have a lot of work to do, if they are to gatecrash the European places.
Pellegrini sat down for his pre-match press conference yesterday, and responded to reporters when asked whether the owners had set him the target of achieving European football this season, as quoted by Football.London:
“No, we did not talk about that. Just the general direction of the club. Football is so difficult to predict. We will try and play the best way and get near the top of the table as we can but that is not a previous target or ambition.”
He was then asked whether the owners expect him to achieve a certain goal:
“No.”
Despite Pellegrini’s words, the West Ham owners will surely be disappointed if the Chilean fails to guide his side to a top seven finish this season, especially considering how much money he has laid out on new signings this summer.
