Manuel Pellegrini has suggested that West Ham United could soon have Jack Wilshere back available.
In comments reported by Football London, Manuel Pellegrini has suggested that Jack Wilshere will need to come through one more under-23 game unscathed before he is recalled to the West Ham first-team.
Wilshere has had an extremely difficult first season at the London Stadium. He has made one appearance since the first game in September, with Football London reporting that he has suffered two separate ankle injuries.
The 27-year-old – who earns £100,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – is now working his way back towards full fitness, and recently made his return in an under-23 game at the London Stadium on Sunday.
And Pellegrini has confirmed that he wants the former Arsenal man to play one more time with the youngsters when they take on Derby on Monday before coming into contention to play a role in the final weeks of the Premier League season.
“Jack Wilshere is almost ready,” he said, as reported by Football London. “He played an U23s game last week and he will play another one.
“Hopefully next week he will be 100 per cent with us.”
It remains to be seen if Wilshere features for the senior side this season, but he undoubtedly goes into next year with plenty to prove having played just five times since joining the Hammers.
The fact that he joined on a free transfer has taken some of the pressure off. But given his career record, there will probably be a number of West Ham fans writing him off proving a worthwhile signing. He now needs to show that the club’s roll of the dice last summer has not backfired.
