Santos is very much an unproven prospect, but he has shown glimpses of quality with Barcelona and Nice.
Fredericks, meanwhile, has spent most of his career to date playing in the Championship.
And if West Ham were prepared to offer him a chance to step up to the top tier, it would show a change in transfer policy, when compared to most their defensive additions in recent times.
