Southampton's Italian striker Manolo Gabbiadini celebrates scoring their fourth goal during the English Premier League football match between Watford and Southampton at Vicarage Road...

Manolo Gabbiadini sent his former club Southampton a message on Twitter after Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side ensured that they would playing Premier League football again next season.

The Saints have only been on the periphery of the relegation battle in recent weeks after four wins in their previous eight games heading into the weekend. But it would have still been a relief to make relegation mathematically impossible.

Hasenhuttl’s men played out an enthralling 3-3 draw with Bournemouth at St Mary’s. And with Cardiff City losing away at Fulham, the Saints have now moved seven points clear of the bottom three with two games remaining.

Southampton were not mathematically safe until the final day of last season, but it was Gabbiadini who scored the goal that left them in a comfortable position after the penultimate game of the campaign as they beat relegation rivals Swansea City 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium.

The Italian returned to Serie A in January after two years with the club, but he showed that he is still keeping an eye on the Saints’ results with a message on social media following the draw with the Cherries at the weekend…

Southampton fans would be forgiven for feeling a lot more optimistic heading into this summer than they would have done 12 months ago, despite the fact that they have only secured survival slightly earlier this time around.

Hasenhuttl appears to be building something impressive on the south coast. The club are back to embracing managers who have a project in mind, and it would be no surprise if the Saints were nowhere near the relegation battle this time next year.
