Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has applauded Aston Villa star Yannick Bolasie after the on-loan Everton winger scored his first goal for Steve Bruce’s side on Tuesday night.

Bolasie, 29, joined Villa this summer on loan after falling down the pecking order at Everton, as the DR Congo international struggles to show his previous best following a season-long knee injury.

Everton paid Crystal Palace £30million to sign Bolasie in the summer of 2016, but he suffered a horrendous injury just a matter of months later which saw him ruled out for more than a year. He returned last season, but found the going tough.

Behind the likes of new signings Richarlison and Bernard in the pecking order, Bolasie eventually decided to join Villa on loan and he opened his account after coming off the bench against Rotherham on Tuesday night.

The former Bristol City man got on the end of Ahmed El Mohamady’s cross with an excellent header, diverting the ball past Rotherham goalkeeper Marek Rodak to earn a 2-0 win. Lukaku praised Bolasie, saying the “only way is up”.

Lukaku and Bolasie played alongside each other at Everton, before Belgian striker Lukaku left Goodison Park to join Manchester United.

Bolasie had already made his Villa debut in a 1-1 draw against Blackburn last weekend, coming off the bench to play 13 minutes. He is now in line to make his first start for Bruce’s side on Saturday.

Villa play host to Sheffield Wednesday and will be looking to build on Tuesday night’s win, which was Villa’s first victory in seven games. They will be buoyed after The Owls lost to Nottingham Forest 2-1 on Wednesday evening.
