Manchester United continue to be linked with Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff.

Manchester United first team coach Michael Carrick has told The Mirror that he thinks Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff is a ‘fantastic’ talent.

The Red Devils travelled up to Tyneside on Sunday to take on Newcastle, with both teams desperate for a result after poor runs of form.

It was Newcastle who claimed the win though, as Matty Longstaff fired home an emotional winner in his first ever Premier League appearance.

Steve Bruce intriguingly went with brothers Sean and Matty Longstaff in midfield, and the decision paid off as the younger sibling proved to be the match-winner.

That goal has somewhat overshadowed how impressive Sean was though, as the 21-year-old again turned in a strong display, having only really emerged into the Newcastle first team earlier this year.

Longstaff has emerged as one of the top young midfielders in the Premier League, and he’s actually been heavily linked with Sunday’s opponents Manchester United.

The Daily Star claimed just last week that United think the can sign Longstaff for around £40million in January, believing they can convince Newcastle to sell their homegrown talent.

Comparisons have been made to fellow Geordie Carrick in terms of their passing range, but given that Carrick was a United hero, that is also a factor in the comparison.

On Monday, United first team coach Carrick offered his view on Longstaff, claiming he is a ‘fantastic talent’ but didn’t want to support the comparisons as it’s ‘not fair’ on the youngster, and his praise will only stoke the rumours that United are preparing to move in 2020.

“Sean is a fantastic talent and doing well at the moment,” said Carrick. “He hasn’t played a awful lot of games yet, but the future is bright for him. I don’t like comparing his playing style to mine. It is not fair on Sean. He is carving his own career out. He has his own traits and strengths. I always enjoy seeing young players getting a chance,” he added.
