The Manchester United ace would be a superb addition to the Southampton squad.

The Saints will be determined to keep hold of Virgil van Dijk – arguably their best player, this summer, as some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs continue to circle St Mary’s, waiting for the right time to swoop in for the Dutchman.

With talk of a transfer fee in excess of £50 million, however, Southampton will find it incredibly hard to resist any approach made for the centre-back.

With this in mind, they must be drawing up a list of potential replacements for the 25-year-old, as his exit seems to be edging closer with every week that passes.

And an interesting option for the south coast outfit could be Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, with the Telegraph claiming that Jose Mourinho is willing to sanction his exit for as little as £15 million, following Victor Lindelof’s arrival at Old Trafford.

Standing at 6ft 4in, the 27-year-old cuts an imposing physique, and is dominant in the air. He is also extremely quick along the ground, and a good reader of the game.

He would certainly add a certain level of authority to the Saints’ back-line, and his experience of playing at the highest level for such a prolonged period of time would undoubtedly prove to be a huge asset to them.

The south coast outfit will not have things all their own way, however, if they attempt to move for Smalling, with he Telegraph claiming that West Ham, West Brom and Everton are already showing strong interest in the centre-back.

If Southampton are serious about improving on last season’s efforts though, they must do everything within their power to bring the United man to St Mary’s this summer.
